Responsive: Collaborative Practice 1: First/second meeting

I though for this blog post i would skip over the first time meeting my new partners for the project, as not much work was discussed, we mostly got to know one another. In our group we have Tom, an illustrator who i think will probably be the main focus of pre production, Oscar, animator and good friend, it will be interesting to see how we work together, i admire his work and work ethic, but being friends may make working together difficult, and Hattie, a graphic designer. Together we are doing the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) brief to make an animation informing an audience of people our age willing to try new things about what MSC does and how it helps the environment. We met, and then went our separate ways.

After this we organised a meeting to discuss what we wanted to produce for the brief, and after 2 hours of discussion we didn't really get anywhere with was disheartening. We had plenty of great ideas, we just couldn't settle on one. I will avoid being bitchy because its unprofessional and a habit that i need to get out of, but i did feel that some of the team were a little precious about certain ideas, and i feel like if we had picked an idea and then worked out the logistics of it after we would have been able to get a better start on it, i feel like i may be wrong in thinking this would be a good way of doing things however.

The ideas that some of us had were about an ad that didn't take itself too seriously and was visually interesting, this followed themes of giants in the sea, battles between galleons and modern day battleships, however none of these were developed very well.

We have agreed to go our separate ways and meet back up on Friday to discuss ideas again, in the mean time i plan to develop some new ideas, and flush out some of the original ones we had at the time. I hope we get an idea soon, i feel like we are a little late.

Responsive: Onform 6

For this onform i wanted to do something a little more detailed, after seeing some really cool detailed shapes before i wanted to start putting more effort into the detail of the shapes, though proud of my previous shape, the dragon, i feel like it needed a little more detail for it to stand out. For this shape i struggled with an idea, and unfortunately has to rush it last minute, however i set aside an entire evening to play with some more detailed drawing. I feel like some of it worked and some of it didn't, i am really happy with the moon surface and the sky ( i even hid a little satellite ) but i'm not so happy with the ground, wheels and mechanisms of the rover. I feel like i will get better at this with practice though, so i will keep at it.

For this weeks onform i felt a bit of a rush to get my shape out, as i thought the idea i had for it was an obvious one, after a lengthy christmas holiday i felt a little bit rusty when i started this shape, however i persevered, and after a long frustrating battle i had the sleeping dragon shape, from here i decided to animate him breathing and the shape twinkling, as i experimented with drawing texture for the treasure and it just didn't work, so i thought the twinkling would show that its supposed to be shiny and valuable. The breathing was as simple as planning out the key frames of him with empty lungs, then full lungs, then as he empties them again. Though the line wiggles a little bit much for my liking, i am really happy with the result, i particularly like how he breathes out smoke and then it pops away, which i just did on a whim.

This onform i was not particularly happy about, and so i was a lot less upset when it didn't get posted. I didn't really think this shape through and i think you can tell from looking at it. This was my first attempt at shading, though i'm definitely going to attempt shading again but with more effort next time.

I was very proud of this onform, which makes me more upset that i submitted too late for it to be posted. Though i submitted within the deadline time, there must have been a backlog of unposted illustrations because mine didn't get posted, despite this being perhaps one of my best work for onform yet.

I wanted to try out the pen tool as i had seen a lot of really cool stuff done in the past week, and i thought i would give it a go. I also decided to make a face, but get him to face the left rather than the right, this is because everyone seemed to be using the shape to create a face the right, i felt this would give the piece a noticeable difference to the other works.

I wanted to animate this weeks Onform. I felt like my idea for this weeks shape was good, but i feel like the actual work i produced wasn't so great. for this week I created a few individual elements and then animated them in after effects later, then, using the image sequence i turned it into a gif with photoshop. I am super happy with the little fish, i feel like his movement is very nice, and the light beams, though obviously brush strokes that could have been an easy fix, i was still very happy with them. I feel like i need to work on my line and shading though. Luckily the shapes only being able to be worked on for a week is definitely a win for me, as i won't focus on the issues i have with this shape, and simply use the methods i know do or don't work to better my future shapes.

For one of my responsive briefs i decided i would submit a shape a week for onform, a weekly drawing competition in which a random shape in a random colour is given to us and by the end of the week we need to have submitted an illustration around said shape. I thought this would work well for me to practice my drawing technique on a tablet, and also just force me to use unconventional shapes for drawings. For the first week i decided to keep it quite simple and just went for two hills, i just tried to work on keeping my lines as smooth as possible. Overall i am very happy with this shape, i kept it simple because i thought if i put too much in it would get bogged down by sub par drawing, but i am happy with the amount i did.
